Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teachers' Registration.

Michael Ring

Question:

140 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be registered as a qualified teacher in view of the fact she applied and paid the fees some time ago. [4161/96]

Registration as a secondary teacher is dependent, inter alia, on the qualifications of the applicant being recognised for teaching purposes by the Registration Council for Secondary Teachers and on the satisfactory completion of a probationary year of wholetime teaching service at second level.

An applicant's qualifications must be assessed by the registration council. The process requires a separate application to be submitted with the appropriate fee — currently £30 in the case of graduates who qualified within the EU. Where the registration council has granted general recognition to a third level body for a particular course of undergraduate study, this fee may be waived where the applicant has followed the recognised course.

The person referred to by the Deputy has submitted an application for assessment of her qualifications. However, she has not paid the full fee required under the regulations for the register of secondary school teachers. The assessment of the applicant's qualifications cannot proceed until the full fee has been paid. She was advised accordingly in November last. Should her qualifications be recognised by the registration council, she may then submit an application for registration. This application for registration must be accompanied by a fee of £10. Registration cannot be effected until all conditions of registration have been met, including completion of the year of probationary service.
