27 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he will confirm that a sum of £1,254,500 was expended on sporting and artistic promotions through the tourism promotion and development fund for the year ending December 1994; the total sum expended for the year ending December 1995; and if he will give details of the expenditure in each of the years 1993 and 1994. [2225/96]

The Tourism Promotion and Development Fund was introduced under Subhead B3 of my Department's Vote in 1994 and I propose to circulate a schedule with the Official Report, outlining details of the £1,2545 million expenditure from that fund by Bord Fáilte on sporting and artistic promotions. Expenditure in 1995 totalled £.99 million.

What are the criteria under which these moneys are disbursed?

It is for the purposes of tourism promotion and development. It puts a number of new strategies in place to boost tourism. One is to harness the success of Ireland's leading sporting and artistic personalities for overseas tourism promotion purposes and assist in attracting major international sporting and cultural events to Ireland. It is an assessment by Bord Fáilte of where assistance can be given to boost the industry internationally.
