Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sentencing Option.

Ivor Callely

Question:

191 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if prisoners participate in hard labour within the prison system; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4256/96]

The term "hard labour" refers to a sentencing option which, while it remains on the Statute Book for some cases, is never nowadays imposed by the courts. A wide range of work and work-related activities is carried out by inmates in the 12 prisons and places of detention under my jurisdiction. The work involved is related both to the maintenance and upkeep of the institutions and to the provision of rehabilitative activities for the inmates.
