Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Casual Street Traders.

Joe Costello

Question:

196 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice the reason the provisions of the Criminal Justice Act, 1993, are being used against Dublin's casual street traders; the number of occasions this Act has been used for this purpose in Dublin; the number of times the Act has been used to charge suspected drug abusers/pushers in Dublin; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4399/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that information is not compiled in such a manner which would provide statistics on the occupation of those charged under the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, or indicate the activity that they were engaged in at the time of their arrest. The Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, was introduced to enable the gardaí to deal with public order offences such as threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour in a public place and intoxication in a public place.
