Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dairy Farming.

Frank Crowley

Question:

253 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of farm families involved in the European Court rejection of the Development Category of Dairy Farms; the status, income and permanent milk quota in place for these people; his views on whether this group deserves a derogation; the action, if any, he intends to take regarding the recent decision of the EU court to reject the demands of the development category of dairy farmers; his views on the plight of the genuine group of farm families who drew down development plans to modernise and improve their situation in conjunction with his Department's advisory service officials and entered into serious financial investment to carry out the above and have now been crushed by a European Court decision; the plans, if any, he has to grant support those responsible farming families. [4537/96]

A group of farmers who had development plans instituted legal proceedings against the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry. The European Court has recently given a decision on certain aspects of this case which were referred to it by the Supreme Court. However as the legal proceedings are ongoing, it would not be appropriate for me to comment on details of the case at this time.
