Seamus Brennan

Question:

264 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications in view of a report in The Irish Times of 21 February 1996, his proposed policy as to whether semi-State bodies such as Telecom Éireann, the ESB and Aer Lingus will be permitted, if partly privatised or wholly privatised, to pay the low PRSI rate for PRSI contributions rather than the high PRSI rate payable by their competitors such as ESAT and Ryanair. [4541/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 259 and 264 together. It is the Government's intention that legislation will provide that the categories of social insurance of Telecom Éireann and its employees shall be continued, as they currently stand, in any equity-based strategic alliance entered into in regard to the company.

It is therefore premature to speculate on what might or might not be contained in respect of Government policy in regard to the issues raised until legislation is published.
