Vol. 462 No. 2

Written Answers. - PAYE Payments.

James McDaid

Question:

84 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Finance the amount of PAYE paid by Deputies and Senators in Leinster House in 1994 and 1995; the amount paid by the entire staff at Leinster House in 1994 and 1995; and the amount of PAYE paid by company directors in 1994 and 1995. [4547/96]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that statistics are not recorded or processed in such a manner as would enable the precise information on the amounts of tax paid under the PAYE system by Deputies and Senators and the entire staff of Leinster House requested by the Deputy to be provided. The only relevant information available are the amounts of PAYE tax paid in respect of the income tax year 1993-94 and 1994-95 for all Members and staff combined of both Houses of the Oireachtas, excluding tax deducted from the Office holders salaries paid to Ministers and Ministers of State.

The amounts of PAYE tax paid are as follows:

Year

£m

1993/94

3.90

1994/95

3.89

I have been informed by the Revenue Commissioners that to provide a breakdown of the figures between Deputies, Senators and staff as well as identify the tax separately deducted from Office holders salaries paid to Minister and Ministers of State would require a detailed examination of all the relevant P35 end-of-year returns submitted for the Houses of the Oireachtas and the various Government Departments. Such an examination could only be carried out at a disproportionate cost. The only relevant information available relating to directors is that pertaining to proprietary directors. The estimated income tax liability of proprietary directors for the income tax year 1992-93, the latest year for which relevant statistics are available, was £294.1 million.
