Vol. 462 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Officer Recruitment.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

86 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice when the next public advertisement for applications for the position of prison officer will be made; the mechanism, if any, there is whereby a person can make application between times of formal advertising for these positions; the procedure for these applications; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4710/96]

Recruitment to the position of prison officer is a matter for the Civil Service Commissioners who are independent in the discharge of their functions.

I am informed by the commissioners that the method of application for positions as prison officer is by way of response to public advertisement placed by them. The commissioners have no plans at present to advertise a competition for the recruitment of prison officers. The commissioners have informed me that my Department's recruitment requirements in the foreseeable future will be met from among those who made application to them in response to advertisements placed in September 1993 and April 1995.
