Vol. 462 No. 3

Written Answers. - Insurance Premium Loadings.

James McDaid

Question:

12 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the discrimination against diabetics by the motor insurance industry whereby a premium loading is applied for drivers suffering from this condition. [3531/96]

Insurers impose premium loadings or charge higher premiums in the light of their underwriting experience in each category of insurance business. Most insurers provide cover for diabetics suffering with a mild form of this condition without applying loadings of any kind. Insurers applying loadings on premiums for motorists with more severe forms of diabetes do so on the basis of their claims experience for such policyholders.

I understand from the Irish Insurance Federation that negotiations are taking place with the Irish Diabetic Association with a view to establishing a standard questionnaire to be completed by diabetic proposers for motor insurance or named drivers on such policies with a view to a better assessment of this risk.
