Vol. 462 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fianna Fáil Staff.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

46 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Finance the number of secretarial assistants, administrative assistants and administrators, allocated to Fianna Fáil Deputies or Senators, or to the Fianna Fáil party, under the scheme of secretarial assistance for Members; and the estimated cost of such staff in 1996. [4604/96]

Under the scheme of secretarial assistance for non-office holding Deputies and Senators, staff are allocated to each party on the basis of its non-office holding strength in Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann. Staff are allocated on the basis of one for each Deputy and one for each three Senators. A number of additional staff are provided for Oireachtas party tasks which like higher grade posts are allocated on a basis relating to parties' non-office holding strength.

The number of staff currently allocated to Fianna Fáil under the scheme is: 1 Chef de Cabinet; 79 secretarial assistants; 9 administrative assistants; 3 at administrator level.

The Office of the Houses of the Oireachtas have estimated the 1996 cost for the secretarial assistance scheme for the Fianna Fáil party at £1,790,000.
