Vol. 462 No. 3

Written Answers. - Use of Lakes of Killarney.

John O'Leary

Question:

59 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will grant permission to the Killarney Water Rescue Organisation, County Kerry, for the use of any part of the Lakes of Killarney for training purposes on conditions and terms to be stipulated by the Office of Public Works. [4573/96]

The National Parks and Wildlife Service is considering this matter at present. The proposal involves the use of a 40 horsepower dinghy, which is greatly in excess of the recommended engine sizes for privately owned open boats on the lakes. The controls on engine sizes are aimed at reducing noise levels on the lakes and preventing disturbance to both the natural resources and the lakes and to other recreational users, particularly fishermen. The controls were introduced in consultation with local fishing clubs, who have also expressed concern at the Water Rescue Club's proposal.

A final decision on the application is expected to be made in the near future.
