Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - Community Alert Schemes.

Michael Smith

Question:

110 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for Justice the additional financial resources, if any, she intends to provide to assist in the building up of successful community alert schemes to aid the Garda in the fight against crime. [5208/96]

I have met Muintir na Tíre on regular occasions to discuss the operation of the community alert schemes throughout the country. Following a review of the community alert scheme, I announced in January of this year a grant of £50,000 to Muintir na Tíre which will enable them to significantly increase the number of schemes operating in the country. I am also providing funding of £4,000 per annum for the publication of a newsletter which will be issued quarterly by community alert.

I would also refer the Deputy to my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 22 of 21 February 1996 relating to this matter.
