Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - Beef Tribunal Report.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

127 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will further elaborate on his answer to Parliamentary Question No. 56 on Thursday, 29 February 1996, as to whether he accepts the findings of the Beef Tribunal report. [5260/96]

I can accept the findings of the tribunal in general and I repeat that the Government is committed to implementing all the recommendations of the tribunal and in particular those referring to agriculture in chapter 25 of the report. The tribunal recognised the controls improvements already put in place by the Department (pages 704 to 712). In particular it indicated that the control systems introduced by the Department of Agriculture "go very far towards dealing with the weaknesses in the system disclosed during the course of the Tribunal and have rendered unnecessary many of the recommendations which might otherwise have been made by the Tribunal".
