Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - EU Fishing Regulations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

141 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine the impact, if any, of the EU fishing regulations on Irish fisherment in 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5070/96]

Within the framework of the Common Fisheries Policy there is a considerable body of EU fishing regulations relating notably to fleet capacity, quotas and the control and monitoring of fishing activity. These impose ongoing obligations on the Irish fishing industry as well as the fleets of other member states. I am committed to working with the industry to address as far as possible the constraints while enhancing the opportunities within the Common Fisheries Policy and, in particular, to ensure that EU regulations serve to optimise the management and conservation of the fisheries resource through tight controls and strict enforcement by all member states.
