143 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for the Marine the company that has been awarded the contract for the multipurpose research vessel; whether tenders were submitted by Irish interests for this contract; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5201/96]

Minister for the Marine (Mr. Barrett)

The Marine Institute has awarded the contract for the construction of a new national marine research vessel to Scheepswerf Visser b.v. of Holland. The price is IR£1,765,000, excluding VAT. Two Irish boatyards tendered for the project but were not successful and have been informed accordingly.
