Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ministerial Air Transport Use.

Ivor Callely

Question:

18 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the number of times that ministerial air transport was utilised in 1995; the Government's view on the need for the Government jet; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5063/96]

In 1995 Air Corps aircraft, both fixed wing and helicopters, were used on 310 occasions to transport members of the Government and Ministers of State on internal and external journeys.

The continued availability of a ministerial air transport service is an essential facility for the Government in conducting its business. This is particularly the case during this year when Ireland will hold the Presidency of the European Union from 1 July. The availability of a dedicated aircraft is clearly necessary when account is taken of many factors such as the priority of Ministers engagements, the demands of Minister's schedules and the availability and suitability of other travel arrangements.

The criteria for the use of Air Corps aircraft have been set down by successive Governments over the years and are regarded as satisfactory.
