Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Legislative and Administration Priorities.

Ivor Callely

Question:

52 Mr. Callely asked the Taoiseach the legislative and administrative priorities of his Department in 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5259/96]

The role of my Department is to support me in carrying out my functions as Taoiseach and its administrative priorities are determined by and change in accordance with that role.

At present, its priorities for 1996 are: the development of the peace process and to support the process of all party negotiations commencing on 10 June; to seek to agree a new programme with the social partners to build on the achievements of social partnership to date; to conduct a successful Presidency of the European Union; to oversee the implementation of the Strategic Management Initiative in the Public Service; to advance the Government Programme of Oireachtas Reform; to promote the continued development and expansion of the International Financial Services Centre; to support the work of the Devolution Commission in renewing the system of local government in Ireland; to support the process of local development especially as a strategy to tackle unemployment and social exclusion; to promote rural renewal, especially in the west and among island communities, through support for appropriate projects.
As regards legislation, I hope to put forward proposals for a referendum on Cabinet confidentiality during the course of the year.
