Ivor Callely

Question:

75 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the legislative and administrative priorities of his Department in 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5292/96]

My priorities for 1996 will be geared to continuing with and consolidating the progress made in all my areas of responsibility since my appointment as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht by developing further strategies for the support of the Irish language and the Gaeltacht, the arts, culture, broadcasting and heritage as well as the film, audiovisual and music industries in Ireland.

My legislative priorities for 1996 include the Cultural Institutions Bill, the presentation of Broadcasting legislative proposals to Government, the Wildlife (Amendment) Bill, the National Parks and Heritage Areas Bill, the introduction of Regulations to transpose the Habitats Directive into Irish law, and the ratification of the Convention on the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe.
My administrative priorities for 1996 include the completion of arrangements to transfer the Heritage Services of the Office of Public Works to my Department and the work which will arise in the context of the forthcoming Irish Presidency of the EU.
