Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Compulsory Generic Prescribing.

Ivor Callely

Question:

103 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he supports compulsory generic prescribing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5715/96]

Limerick East): Decisions regarding the prescribing of particular medicines are soley a matter for the professional judgment of the medical practioner concerned. Measures taken by the Department and the health boards, in conjunction with the medical profession, for encouraging the rational, safe and cost effective use of prescription medication, protect the right of the doctor to prescribe as he/she considers necessary, including the prescribing of generic medicines.
