Vol. 463 No. 2

Written Answers. - Ballinasloe (Galway) Mill Demolition.

Robert Molloy

Question:

15 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the reason he allowed the demolition of the old corn mill at Poolboy, Ballinasloe, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5768/96]

The ruins of Pollboy mill outside Ballinasloe, County Galway, which were in a dangerous condition were demolished in connection with the proposed development of navigation along the river Suck to the town of Ballinasloe itself. The decision to demolish the ruins was taken only after lengthy and careful consideration of a number of alternative routes for the development. The evidence gathered shows that the scheme of works now in hands presents the most practical and cost effective solution to the extension of the navigation to the town. The cost of preserving the ruins, which had no particular architectural or archaeological merit, would have been prohibitive.

Planning approval for demolition was received from Ballinasloe urban district countil in May 1995 and following an appeal by a local group against the decision, the approval was upheld by An Bord Pleanála.
