53 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the reason the occupation of a woman is not recorded on the birth certificate of her child; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5931/96]
54 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform what plans, if any, he has to introduce legislation to enable a person who has changed gender to have their original birth certificate altered. [5976/96]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 53 and 54 together. The format of the birth certificate is set out in form A to the Births and Deaths Registration (Ireland) Act, 1863. A comprehensive review of the legislation governing the registration of births, deaths and marriages is being undertaken in my Department with a view to producing new legislation more suited to modern needs and conditions. Matters pertaining to the birth certificate are being examined as part of that review.
