Vol. 463 No. 2

Written Answers. - Law Exam Changes.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

77 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the sense of grievance felt by final year law students in view of changes in their final entrance examination; if she carried out a review of the proposed changes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5927/96]

As I stated on 21 February in reply to a similar question, the Law Society has informed me that it decided to allow existing law graduates, both from universities here and Queen's University Belfast who have qualified in the five years prior to the recent High Court decision in this matter to enter the Law Society's law school with exemptions.

I have asked the Advisory Committee on Legal Education and Training (ACLET) to consider the implications of the recent Supreme Court decision in regard to entry to the Law Society's law school by current and future law degree students and to make such recommendations as it sees fit in the matter. The ACLET is chaired by Mr. Justice Ronan Keane and includes representatives of the universities, the Law Society, the King's Inns, the Higher Education Authority, IBEC, ICTU, the Union of Students of Ireland and my Department. Its functions include examining matters relating to professional legal education and making recommendations to the relevant bodies in this area.
