Vol. 463 No. 2

Written Answers. - Research and Development Expenditure.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

84 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the amount of money spent on academic and commercial research and development; and the way in which this compares with rates in Europe and other countries. [5924/96]

Table 1 following gives details of the expenditure on research and development in Ireland (in £ million and as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product) and compares the Irish percentage figures with the EU and the OECD averages. These comparisons, which are based on OECD statistics and definitions, are for 1993 — the latest year for which statistics are available.

Table 2 illustrates how these figures have moved over time from 1985 to 1993.
