Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Convoy (Donegal) School Extension.

Máirín Quill

Question:

35 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education when she intends to proceed with the extension to St. Brigid's national school. Convoy, Lifford, County Donegal in view of the urgency of the overcrowding and potential fire hazards in existing prefabs. [6680/96]

Mary Coughlan

Question:

46 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in allocating resources towards the proposed extension to St. Brigid's national school, Convoy, County Donegal in 1995; if she will sanction funding as a matter of urgency; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6595/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 46 together.

A building project at St. Brigid's national school, Convoy, County Donegal, is included in my Department's national school building programme in 1995. The project has been progressed through preliminary architectural planning and is now ready for tender.
Due to the current level of contractual commitments on the primary school building programme it is not possible for my Department to allow this particular project to proceed to tender immediately. A decision on the timing of the tender process will be taken later in the year in the light of expenditure on existing contractual commitments. For this reason it is not possible for me at this stage to give a firm date as to when tenders will be invited. My Department is aware of the accommodation needs at St. Brigid's and will ensure that the project proceeds to construction at the earliest opportunity.
