Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Deaf Community Issues.

Chris Flood

Question:

38 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Education if she has satisfied herself that facilities exist within her Department which ensures that when issues pertaining to deafness and the deaf community arise the opinions and values of the deaf community are fully available to her; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5397/96]

I am satisfied that where educational issues arise which would affect the interests of particular groups, including the hearing impaired, my Department makes every effort to ensure that the opinions and values of those concerned are sought and considered.

It is open to any group or individual to draw my attention to any issues relating to the work of my Department which affect them. I can assure the Deputy that any such representations receive every consideration in the context of policy formulation.

Officers of my Department are in regular contact with individuals and organisations representing the hearing impaired community in relation to matters affecting education services in this area.
