Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dunmore East (Waterford) School Facilities.

Austin Deasy

Question:

47 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction the provision of an all purpose room at the Light of Christ girls national school, Dunmore East, County Waterford in view of the fact that it has no indoor recreational/assembly facilities for 140 students, and it consists of five classrooms and a storeroom which is used by the remedial teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4155/96]

It is not possible to provide grant-aid towards the cost of a general purpose room at the Light of Christ girls' national school, Dunmore East, County Waterford, at this time.

In 1994, I announced that new building projects at schools of four classrooms or more would also include a general purpose facility. While I am anxious to extend the provision of general purpose facilities in primary schools, resources are strictly limited and the priority must remain the provision of essential classroom accommodation and the elimination of existing sub-standard classrooms.
