Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Supervision of Pupils.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

111 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for the supervision of pupils when classes are split-up due to the unavailability of substitute cover for certified sick leave staff absences. [6832/96]

The organisation of classes within schools, which includes a responsibility to ensure that classes are adequately supervised, is a matter for principal teachers. Similarly, the matter of employing substitute teachers rests with boards of management. The salary of all substitutes is, of course, paid by my Department.
