Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dunsoghly Castle (Dublin) Access.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

144 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the outcome of discussions between officials of his Department and the owner of land at Dunsoghly Castle, St. Margaret's, County Dublin, regarding renewing access for the public to this national monument which has remained closed since the filming of "Braveheart", although it is reported that certain individuals have been allowed into the castle but still the general public is excluded. [7090/96]

As I stated in my reply to the Deputy's Question No. 124 of 5 March 1996, the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service of my Department is having ongoing discussions with the owner of the land surrounding the castle with a view to resolving the matter of public access. It has not yet been possible to reach a successful outcome.

The owner of the land has permitted groups and individuals to cross his land to reach the castle, by prior arrangement with the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service. It is hoped that this arrangement will continue until a successful outcome of the ongoing discussions is reached.
