Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork Resource Teacher.

Máirín Quill

Question:

169 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if she intends to allocate a resource teacher to a school (details supplied) in Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6904/96]

I have no proposals to make a resource teacher post available to the school in question. The role of the resource teacher is to support ordinary teaching staff in dealing with the special needs of children with disabilities who are fully integrated into ordinary primary schools.

The school to which the Deputy refers is a special school. The particular staffing needs of all such schools are recognised through the reduced pupil teacher ratios which apply in such cases.

I am aware that the school in question has brought its particular difficulty to the attention of my Department. This matter is currently being considered and the school will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
