Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged School Status.

Liam Aylward

Question:

199 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education if she will grant special status recognition and appoint a remedial teacher to primary schools (details supplied) in the Tullow area of County Carlow. [7135/96]

I assume that the special status recognition to which the Deputy refers relates to the grant of disadvantaged area status. I am not in a position at present to extend disadvantaged area status or to allocate a remedial teacher post to the schools in question.

My Department is currently reviewing its approach to the selection and support of pupils suffering educational disadvantage. I hope to be in a position to make a further announcement in relation to this matter in the near future. The needs of the schools in question will be considered in the context of any future development of the disadvantaged areas scheme which may be undertaken.

When I am next in a position to extend the remediation service, the schools referred to by the Deputy will receive every consideration.
