Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Solicitors' Unqualified Substitutes.

Tony Gregory

Question:

231 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if unqualified persons are standing in for solicitors and seeking remands in the courts for defendants; and her views on whether this is an acceptable practice. [7154/96]

The conduct of any court case is a matter for the presiding judge and I have no function in the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware, the courts are, subject only to the Constitution and the law, independent in the exercise of their judicial functions and it is not, therefore, open to me to comment on the conduct of court cases.
