Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork Disadvantaged Areas.

Peter Barry

Question:

257 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the representations, if any, he has received to increase the size of the disadvantaged areas in Cork; and, if so, when a decision will be made on the matter. [6930/96]

The current review of disadvantaged areas was initiated by the appointment of the disadvantaged areas appeals panel in 1991.

The panel requested submissions from individuals and groups who wished to have their areas considered for inclusion in the disadvantaged areas. A survey of all areas for which appeals were received was carried out in 1992, and the panel made recommendations on the basis of data returned by farmers who were surveyed. These recommendations were forwarded to the EU Commission in November 1993.

A total of 309 appeals were received in respect of areas in Cork. These involved about 8,800 holdings covering some 226,000 hectares. All of the areas appealed were examined by the appeals panel.

We have recently concluded negotiations with the EU Commission on the areas which are acceptable for designation as disadvantaged. The proposal is now awaiting final approval by the Commission, which is expected before the end of April. It will then have to be approved by the Council of Agriculture Ministers in consultation with the European Parliament.
