20 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons convicted of the crime of rape in 1990; and the range of sentences imposed on them. [7054/96]

66 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons convicted of the crime of rape in 1995; and the range of sentences imposed on them. [7053/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 66 together.

The total number of persons sentenced in 1990, for the offence of rape, was 27. The range of sentences imposed was as follows: 6 months to 1 year, 1; 1 year to 2 years, 2; 3 years to 5 years, 9; 5 years to 10 years, 12; over 10 years, 3.

The total number of persons sentenced in 1995, for the offence of rape, was 24. The range of sentences imposed was as follows: 3 years to 5 years, 2; 5 years to 10 years, 18; over 10 years, 4.
