Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Recommendations for Judicial Appointments Advisory Board.

Noel Davern

Question:

27 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Justice the recommendations, if any, she has received for judicial appointments from the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board; and, if so, the number of recommendations. [7034/96]

The Deputy will be aware that the Government, on 26 March, nominated three High Court Judges for appointment by the President as judges of the Supreme Court and also nominated three persons, including one Circuit Court Judge, for appointment by the President as judges of the High Court.

Prior to this Government decision I had requested the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board to submit to me a list of suitable candidates for appointment as judge to the various courts in accordance with the provisions of the Courts and Court Officers Act, 1995. Having received the board's submission I then brought my proposals in the matter to Government.

Section 16 (8) of the Act requires the publication of notice of an appointment to judicial office in Iris Oifigiúil and the inclusion in that notice, if it be the case, of a statement that the name of the person appointed was recommended by the board. This statutory notice will be published as soon as the persons nominated for judicial office by the Government have been appointed by the President.

However, those persons who were recently nominated by the Government for appointment to judicial office, who were not already members of the Judiciary, were recommended by the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board.
