Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Transfer of Prisoners.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

28 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the reason prisoners were recently transferred to Cork prison from Mountjoy prison, Dublin; the number released from Cork prison as a result; the crimes committed by those released; the length of their sentences; and the term served in each case. [7028/96]

The Deputy will appreciate that the operational requirements of the prison system necessitate transfers of offenders between institutions. It is not the practice to give detailed reasons for such transfers and I do not propose to depart from this practice in this particular case other than to say that one cannot assume that releases from one institution are a direct consequence of such transfers.
