Liam Lawlor

Question:

44 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Justice the current position regarding the £400,000 EU-part funded resource training and development centre for young people at risk in north Clondalkin, Dublin 22 which was announced in 1994; the plans, if any, that are in progress to draw down EU funding; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7070/96]

The North Clondalkin Probation Project (The Tower Programme) was established in 1994 following a recommendation in the Urban Crime and Disorder Report 1992.

The project was approved for ESF funding of up to £302,000 for 1994-95. A total of £248,335 has been received from the ESF to date with the balance due to be received during 1996. Co-funding of £38,322 has been provided by my Department in addition to the cost of the salaries of two full-time members of staff which is in the order of £56,000 per annum. My Department will be providing funding for this project in 1996.
Fifty young people have participated in the project to date. It offers training in woodwork, metalwork, art, literacy and sports. The project is currently operating from rented accommodation in the Clondalkin area.
The project is under the aegis of my Department's Probation and Welfare Service and has a management committee comprising of community representatives, voluntary organisations, representatives from the business sector, the gardaí and the Probation and Welfare Service.
My Department is in the process of purchasing a site on which to erect a purpose built facility for the project.
