Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fundraising Restrictions.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

45 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Justice her views in relation to the fundraising restrictions on organisations such as the Rehab Group. [6417/96]

There is a commitment in the Government Policy Agreement to reform the law relating to administration and regulation of charities along the lines of the report of the Committee on Fundraising Activities for Charitable and Other Purposes which included recommendations relating to the improvement of the position of charitable lotteries.

Minister of State, Deputy Burton, held a very successful conference with a number of charities in June 1995. Work on the preparation of the necessary legislation is proceeding in my Department and it is my intention that proposals will be brought before Government as quickly as possible. To this end an advisory group comprising representatives of a number of organisations working in this area was established in the context of the finalisation of legislative proposals.
