Mary Harney

Question:

76 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the work, if any, that is being carried out by the office of the Attorney General on legislation which will deal with the verification of decommissioned paramilitary arms at some stage in the future. [6397/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 46, 64 and 76 together.

Legal issues arising from the report of the International Body, including the question of legislation that might be necessary in the context of an arms amnesty, are currently being examined by my Department in consultation with the Attorney General's Office.

Deputies will of course be aware that the issues relevant to arms decommissioning which were identified in the report of the International Body will fall to be addressed in the All-Party Negotiations which will get under way on 10 June.

Vital development work is also being undertaken in relation to Digital Mapping, Training, Strategic Management and the installation in the Registries of modern Financial and Accounting systems. An IT manager was appointed in 1993 and a qualified accountant was appointed as Financial Controller in 1994. When fully operational, all of the measures I have outlined will significantly improve the capability of the Land Registry to cope with its workload.
