Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Ecstasy Tablets.

Denis Foley

Question:

52 Mr. Foley asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has for limiting the availability of ecstasy tablets. [7039/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that all possible efforts are being made to seize supplies of the drug commonly known as ecstasy and to apprehend those who are involved in the importation, distribution and sale of the drug. These efforts have led to record seizures of the drug, including the discovery of a so-called "ecstasy factory" in Dublin. A number of persons are currently before the courts arising from these Garda operations.

As Minister for Justice, I intend to bring forward an amendment on Committee Stage to the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Bill, in relation to the powers of gardaí to enter premises where a public dance hall licence is in force. I believe that this will be especially relevant in the context of "rave" dances, which are associated with ecstasy. This proposed amendment arises from a review carried out by my Department of the law in this area.
