Vol. 463 No. 6

Written Answers. - Prisoners' Recreational Facilities.

Ivor Callely

Question:

62 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice her views on the recreational facilities available to prisoners; the proposals, if any, she has to alter these facilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6955/96]

Each of the institutions under the aegis of my Department provides outdoor and indoor recreational facilities for inmates. The outdoor facilities provide for exercise on a group and individual basis, in compounds where football, jogging and other such activities can take place. All institutions have a supervised gymnasium which is used by inmates for a range of activities, including exercise classes on a group and individual basis. Supervision is provided by a qualified instructor. Other facilities which are available in all institutions include television and video showings in a communal area. Indoor activities such as pool, table tennis and board games are available at set times. Limited library facilities are available in all prisons and newspapers are magazines are available on request. Inmates are also encouraged to avail of a varied educational programme under the guidance of teachers from the vocational education services. Recent initiatives in respect of recreation for some female offenders include swimming lessons on a weekly basis at a facility in the local community and the introduction of an outdoor pursuits programme involving canoeing, hill walking, orienteering, rock climbing and sailing.

The level and standard of all services, including recreational, provided for prisoners are very closely monitored by my Department and are continually reviewed with a view to upgrading where practicable.
