Vol. 463 No. 7

Written Answers. - Foreign Treatment Cost.

Brendan Smith

Question:

57 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Health if he will approve at an early date the provision of funding towards the cost of surgery abroad for a person (details supplied) in County Cavan, as outlined in representations on 20 March 1996 by Deputy B. Smith. [7314/96]

Limerick East): I understand that the patient in question has been assessed by his consultant and a formal application is due to be made on his behalf to the North Eastern Health Board seeking assistance towards the cost of his treatment abroad.

Once the board has examined the application and is satisfied that it meets the criteria of the treatment abroad scheme, it will then be in a position to make a decision on the matter. The Deputy will wish to know that health boards may approve cases without reference to the Minister where the total-costs involved are less than £10,000.
