Vol. 463 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Service.

Michael Creed

Question:

69 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the total number of remedial teachers employed by her Department in the primary school sector. [7282/96]

Brendan Smith

Question:

73 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to provide a remedial teaching service to primary schools in County Cavan which do not have access to such a service; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7312/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 69 and 73 together. There are currently 1,188 remedial teachers employed by my Department at primary school level.

I am not in a position at present to make additional remedial teacher posts available to the primary school sector. When I am in a position to extend the remediation service, the needs of all applicant schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will receive every consideration.

Michael Creed

Question:

70 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will give a profile of the 918 primary schools which do not have a remedial teacher; the number of teachers in each school; and the number of schools designated as disadvantaged. [7284/96]

Individual profiles on each of the schools referred to by the Deputy, including particulars of teacher numbers, are not readily available and would require an inordinate investment in time and resources to compile.

In general, schools which do not currently have a remedial teacher service would be small schools, the majority having one or two teachers.

Of the 3,203 primary schools in the country, 310 schools have been designated as disadvantaged.
