Vol. 463 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dublin Terraced Houses.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

76 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the reason that three rows of terraced houses adjacent to Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, formerly occupied by prison guards, are derelict; the plans, if any, she has to demolish or reinstate these houses so that they will not be listed on the derelict sites register; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7296/96]

The former prison staff housing at Cowley Place, North Circular Road, Dublin beside Mountjoy Prison is no longer in use and is considered to be beyond economic repair or refurbishment.

The site at Cowley Place, which includes the former staff housing, is earmarked for a new purpose-built women's prison. The Government on 30 January this year approved recommencement of the work in connection with the building of the new women's prison. On foot of this approval, work on the design of the new facility has been resumed and it is proposed to initiate the appropriate planning process for this development under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Regulations, 1994, in the near future.
