88 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the responsibility, if any, he has for the design of motor vehicles in view of the reply given to Parliamentary Question No. 101 (details supplied) of 27 March 1996 to the Minister for the Environment. [7254/96]
Motor vehicle design is an important element of the EU motor vehicle type approval system which lays down safety and other standards. The system aims, inter alia, to facilitate the marketing and registration of vehicles. My Department, in consultation with the Department of the Environment which has functional responsibility for vehicle safety and environmental standards, service the relevant EU working groups in this area.
