Vol. 463 No. 8

Written Answers. - Deflector Systems.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

176 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will allow a moratorium on deflector systems until he has made a decision on the action he will take arising out of the court case taken by South Coast Community Television, Cork, against his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7388/96]

The Deputy will be aware that so called "deflector" systems, which provide multi-channel TV services, are unlicensed.

The judgment in the court case referred to by the Deputy concerned only one "deflector" operator, namely, South Coast Community TV. Arising from that judgment I have given an undertaking not to take action against South Coast pending an assessment of their application for a licence.

I will have regard to the implications for other deflector systems arising out of that assessment but the Deputy will appreciate that I cannot give any undertakings in relation to these systems.
