Vol. 463 No. 8

Written Answers. - Statistics on Cause of Death.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

55 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Taoiseach the Statistics, if any, that are compiled by the Central Statistics Office in relation to the cause of death; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7351/96]

The Central Statistics Office classifies causes of death in accordance with international recommendations using the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9). Statistics on deaths registered are published in the CSO's quarterly reports on vital statistics, which include tables on the cause of death. The most recent report relates to the third quarter of 1995. More detailed statistics classified by year of occurrence are contained in the CSO's annual reports on vital statistics. The reports for 1991 and 1992 are currently being prepared for publication. Statistics for those years and for deaths which occurred in 1993 are also available on request from the CSO.
