Vol. 463 No. 8

Written Answers. - Clontarf (Dublin) Cultural Centre.

Mary Harney

Question:

88 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he has received an application for funding under the structural funds scheme from the Cluain Tarbh branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for the development of a cultural centre in Clontarf, Dublin 3; if so, when a decision will be made on the application; and his views on whether the proposed centre will be of great benefit to the local community and in attracting tourists to the area. [7639/96]

I can confirm to the Deputy that an application has been submitted to my Department for funding under the cultural development incentives scheme 1994-99, which I am administering under the operational programme for tourism, by the Cluain Tarbh branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in respect of the development of a cultural centre in Clontarf.

As the Deputy will be aware, I have approved in principle the funding of eight projects submitted to me under the cultural development incentives scheme 1994-99. The advisory committee which I have established for this purpose is considering, with a view to making recommendations to me, the other applications received. I expect this process will take approximately another month to complete and I hope to be in a position to approve in principle the funding of further projects and to announce details of these projects in May. A decision will be made on the application submitted by the Cluain Tarbh branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in respect of the cultural centre in Clontarf during this process.
