Vol. 464 No. 2

Written Answers. - Bord Bia Representation.

Michael McDowell

Question:

20 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the proposals, if any, he has to amend the Bord Bia Act, 1994, to ensure the presence of representatives of consumer interests on the board of An Bord Bia; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7790/96]

Matt Brennan

Question:

40 Mr. M. Brennan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to address demands from consumers and consumer groups for representation on bodies such as An Bord Bia. [7579/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 40 together.

Consumer interests are already represented on the board of An Bord Bia. I am, however, examining how the consumer interest can be better catered for in the overall Bord Bia operation and am prepared, if necessary, to propose an amendment to An Bord Bia Act, 1994, for this purpose.

I should add that a representative of the Consumers Association of Ireland is at present a member of the quality consultative committee set up by An Bord Bia last year.
