Vol. 464 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Meath Community Schools.

Mary Wallace

Question:

95 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the current position regarding the proposed community school for Trim, County Meath; the plans, if any, drawn up; when the plans will become available; when the project is due to commence; and if the completion date can be brought forward to September 1997. [8148/96]

A potential site for the new school in Trim is being examined for suitability by the technical staff of the building unit and when this examination has been completed, the question of appointing a design team to undertake the architectural planning will be considered. At this early stage, it is not possible to say when architectural planning will be completed or when construction will commence. Therefore, the Deputy will appreciate that it is not possible to indicate if the completion date can be brought forward to September 1997.

Question:

96 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the current stage of the proposed extension to Ashbourne Community School, County Meath; the various stages that the project must go through prior to construction commencing; the proposed cost of the project; the specific funding that has been allocated for the project during 1996; the expected commencement date of construction; the expected completion date; the number of pupils catered for in the existing building; the number of pupils that will be catered for in the extended building; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8149/96]

A design team has recently been appointed for the architectural planning of the proposed extension at Ashbourne Community School.

The following are the stages the project must go through before approval can be given to commence construction:—

Stage 1 — Site suitability, briefing and site report; Stage 2 — Outline Sketch Scheme; Stage 3 — Developed Sketch Scheme: Stage 4 — Detail Design; Stage 5 — Bills of Quantities; Stage 6 — Tender action and report.

As this project is in the early stages of planning, there is no proposed costing available at present. Funds are being made available this year in respect of design fees, therefore the question of providing capital funds for building will not arise until the planning process has been fully completed. It is not possible at this stage to indicate a commencement date for construction or a date for completion.

The current capacity of the Ashbourne Community School is 650 pupils, and when the new proposed extension is complete the school will be in a position to cater for a long-term enrolment of 1,000 pupils.
I assure the Deputy that every effort will be made to have the planning of the proposed extension progressed as quickly as possible.
