Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Waste Prevention.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

127 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment when he intends to implement the regulation under part 3 of the Waste Management Bill, 1995, wherein he has the power to introduce regulations to provide waste prevention and impose a charge for bags at retail outlets; and his views on the amount that should be charged per bag in order to deter people from continuing to use excessive numbers of bags. [8788/96]

The need for the introduction of charges or other measures in relation to packaging or products in the interests of waste management will be considered in the context of the implementation of the national recycling strategy, the industry-led REPAK scheme and the Waste Management Bill, 1995, which has yet to complete its passage through the Oireachtas.
